The Washington Free Beacon Was “Republican Client” Of Fusion GPS
On Friday night The Washington Free Beacon acknowledged it hired Fusion GPS to dig up dirt on “several GOP presidential candidates” including Donald Trump.
Editor-in-Chief Matthew Continetti and Chairman Michael Goldfarb released the following statement:
“Since its launch in February of 2012, the Washington Free Beacon has retained third party firms to conduct research on many individuals and institutions of interest to us and our readers. In that capacity, during the 2016 election cycle we retained Fusion GPS to provide research on multiple candidates in the Republican presidential primary, just as we retained other firms to assist in our research into Hillary Clinton. All of the work that Fusion GPS provided to the Free Beacon was based on public sources, and none of the work product that the Free Beacon received appears in the Steele dossier. The Free Beacon had no knowledge of or connection to the Steele dossier, did not pay for the dossier, and never had contact with, knowledge of, or provided payment for any work performed by Christopher Steele. Nor did we have any knowledge of the relationship between Fusion GPS and the Democratic National Committee, Perkins Coie, and the Clinton campaign.”
“Representatives of the Free Beacon approached the House Intelligence Committee today and offered to answer what questions we can in their ongoing probe of Fusion GPS and the Steele dossier. But to be clear: We stand by our reporting, and we do not apologize for our methods. We consider it our duty to report verifiable information, not falsehoods or slander, and we believe that commitment has been well demonstrated by the quality of the journalism that we produce. The First Amendment guarantees our right to engage in news-gathering as we see fit, and we intend to continue doing just that as we have since the day we launched this project.”
When the Free Beacon was founded, it was part of a 501(c)(4) organization called the Center for American Freedom, but in 2014 it became a for-profitorganization.
Conservative billionaire Paul Singer, a major funder of the Free Beacon, opposed Trump at the time of the project and funded Rubio's campaign. Bill Kristol, former editor of the Weekly Standard, was on the board of directors for the Center for American Freedom, and blamed former Florida Governor Jeb Bush for Rubio's defeat in his home state, a defeat that sealed his fate in the primaries. Kristol has remained a consistent Never Trumper.
In 2012 Fusion GPS aimed its guns on donors to Mitt Romney, like Idaho businessman Frank VanderSloot. In 2015, when the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) released sting videos showing Planned Parenthood staffers agreeing to sell aborted baby parts for profit, Fusion GPS compiled a misleading report inferring the videos to be false.
Marc Elias and his law firm Perkins Coie representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, paid Fusion GPS to smear her Republican opponent. The firm hired a former British spy with ties to the FBI. The spy, Christopher Steele, wasn’t just any old ex-MI6 agent. He was the head of the Russia desk at MI6.
With more than 380 payments from the Clinton campaign and the DNC being made to Perkins Coie, it is impossible for Hillary not to have direct knowledge of the purpose of those payments or any earmarks being made especially since her campaign continued to fund Fusion GPS’s “research” through the end of October 2016.
Hillary refuses to leave the “stage” of American politics. The unconvicted felon may not remain unconvicted much longer.
An FBI informant with critical information on Russia’s potential influence campaign in the Clinton State Department was cleared by the Department of Justice to testify before Congress. The informant has acquired documents and eyewitness accounts of Russian officials involved in the Uranium One deal and the millions of dollars donated to the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative.
I can almost hear the creaking wheels of the tumbril coming for this corrupt harpy.
