Chrysler, Dodge end right-hand drive production – report

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has reportedly ceased right-hand drive production at its Windsor and Brampton facilities in Canada.

According to a report by of South Africa’s Allpar, the move means the Chrysler and Dodge brands will be leaving South Africa early next year, spelling the end for nameplates like the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Journey.

The move is due to the merging of Chrysler and Fiat in South Africa to shared headquarters, which will take effect “early 2018”, consolidating the fact that the companies are known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) globally.

Other markets expected to be impacted by the changes include the UK, New Zealand, Japan, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and even Australia. However, Alessia Terranova manager of public relations for FCA Australia, issued the following statement:

“I am not at liberty to comment on South Africa’s decision. What I can tell you is that Australia will continue to sell the right-hand drive Chrysler 300 as an ongoing product in our lineup. In relation to Dodge, at this stage, this brand is represented as a parts and service operation only.”

It’s unclear why Australia appears unaffected at this point, considering our 300 models come from the Brampton factory in Canada, though this pretty much shuts down any hopes of seeing a right-hand drive Dodge Challenger or Charger anytime soon.
